It is with deep sadness and profound respect that we announce that Right Worshipful Brother, The Honourable Roland J. Thornhill, has laid down his working tools and has been called to the Grand Lodge Above.

Brother Thornhill passed away on 16 July 2026, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service to his community, his province, and our Craft.

Beyond his commitment to Freemasonry, Brother Thornhill served the public with distinction for many years as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia, cabinet minister, and Deputy Premier. His life was a testament to the Masonic virtues of brotherly love, relief, and truth, lived out on both the floor of the Lodge and the public stage.

The masonic service is as follows:

Visitation
  • When: Monday, July 27 | 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM

  • Where: At the Knox Presbyterian Church, 39 Grant Street Baddeck.

Service & Masonic Service
  • When: Tuesday, July 28 | 11:00 AM

  • Details: A Masonic Service will be held at this time.

Reception
  • A reception will immediately follow the service at the St. Mark’s Lodge Hall.

As we mourn the loss of our distinguished Brother, let us keep his family and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers. Let us remember his contributions to our Province and our Fraternity with gratitude.

The roll of the workmen has been called, and one more MasterMason has failed to answer.

Rest in peace, Brother.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

WBro. Mike Swinimer, PM, MMM, CD

Secretary, Cornwallis Lodge 95
